A Man Named Johnny Cash; Ghost Riders In The Sky; Everything I Need In A Woman; Second Time Around; Hanover Love; His Latest Flame; Child of 1945; Heartaches By The Number; Three Steps To Heaven, I’ll Never Find Another You; Around And Around

Dave Vernon, from Norfolk, is clearly a fan of Johnny Cash, and sings in the same deep country voice. Whilst quite a few of these songs are covers, there are some Dave Vemon originals, namely the title track, which is a tribute to the great Johnny Cash, “Everything I Need In A Woman”, and “Child of 1945 which he co-wrote with Nicky Nichols. Nicky Nicholls wrote “Hangover Love”. These are stories about love and life in true country tradition. It was recorded, mixed and engineered by Jonny Cole, in The Mill Studio, Wingfarthing, Norfolk and Jeff Gipson is on lead guitar on the title track. A pleasant album which I am sure will find favour with the Brit country fans.

Dave Vernon, from Norfolk, is a seasoned country singer/writer who is no doubt, like so many others, influenced by the late Johnny Cash. In fact Dave’s new album is titled ‘A Man Named Johnny Cash’, named for the first track on the album penned by Dave as a loving and respectful tribute to the country legend. The remaining ten songs are an interesting blend of originals, country standards and country versions of pop songs. Chris Andrew’s ‘Second Time Around’, Dave’s own ‘Everything I Need In A Woman’ and Nicky Nicholls’ ‘Hangover Love’ were recorded in Nashville during 1991. Recorded even earlier, in 1984, was ‘Child Of 1945’ based on Nicholls own life and with music by Vernon. ‘Ghost Riders In The Sky’ and ‘Heartaches By The Number’ are known to every country fan and I see no reason why they should not be revived. Dave also had influences outside of country as noted by the inclusion of Elvis’s ‘His Latest Flame’, Chuck Berry’s ‘Around and Around’ and Eddie Cocnran’s Three Steps To Heaven’. ‘I’ll Never Find Another You’ is another take on the Seekers big hit. Good news, my old friend Dave Vernon’s back and his down-to-earth balladeering is good-and-solid! ‘A Man Named Johnny Cash’ is his self-penned tribute to his late hero. Dave’s CD is full of country-story-songs that span all manner of subject-repertoire, old-and-new. As well as Dave’s pieces, there’s instantly catchy, well-sung memories of Elvis, Guy Mitchell, Eddie Cochran, Chuck Berry and even Hollywood cowboy heroes. Particular highlight is the title track that is so relevant. If you like to be stunned again by UK ‘country-club-style’ songs and performances, Dave will oblige!
